The Power of Communication – From Blunt Feedback to Effective Coaching

When I started coaching singers in 2006, my approach to coaching was direct—perhaps too direct. In true Dutch fashion, I would give unfiltered feedback, whether people asked for it or not. I had a clear vision for talent and potential, and I wasn’t afraid to express it. Looking back, I realise that while honesty is crucial, how you communicate can determine whether people actually hear you.

Over the years, my coaching style has evolved. Today, I focus on creating safe spaces where people feel heard, valued, and empowered to grow. I’ve learned that: ✅ A safe space is needed before open communication from all ends can happen
✅ Honesty creates trust, but be aware of the weight of your words
✅ Non-verbal communication is just as important as the words that you speak; body language, a smile, your tone of voice. Or the frown you relax on your forehead.

The Power of Being Seen & Heard

When the TPF show aired, I personally experienced the full spectrum of public opinion. Twitter was ablaze with criticism —some called me harsh, I “laughed like a hyena” and my hair “looked weird”.

However, what stuck with me most wasn’t social media—it was real people. The lovely woman at the Dar es Salaam ferry office who recognized me and smiled. The security guards at the shopping malls, who greeted me as “Judge Natalie” long after the cameras stopped rolling.

Visibility creates opportunities—but so does authenticity. Whether on stage, in business, or in everyday life, the way we communicate and connect shapes our path.
