Opportunity Knocks Once—Will You Be Ready? Lessons from a Career-Making Interview

One shot. 10 minutes. A 6 AM call time.
At 7 months pregnant, I walked into the Kiss FM studio as the Artist Manager for Kenya’s most exciting band of that moment, knowing this was the opportunity to make ourselves heard. A top radio host had given us one chance— 10minutes on air. If we were late, we were out.

It had been about a year since I started working with H_art the Band. I’d told them to be patient, to make themselves known and grow a fanbase one performance at a time. Which is exactly what they had been doing; developing their sound and live performance at the same time.

Miraculously, they made it on time – just before 6am they walked in! And when the Hosts heard them perform live in the studio, everything changed. The Band was ready, open, excited. They created a whole vibe in the studio, which translated into people’s living rooms, into the matatus that were taking people to work and into the shops that had tuned in too.

The station manager ran in and announced: “I’m putting you on high rotation, we LOVE YOUR SONG and so many people are calling in to say the same! We will put it on air every 2 hours.”
