Building Connections – How Giving Freely Opened Doors to Unexpected Opportunities

One of the most fascinating experiences in my career was becoming an audition judge on a major East African talent show. In 2013, I found myself as a judge on Tusker Project Fame—a show broadcast across five countries, often compared to Idols. For six seasons, plus an All-Stars edition, it was the ultimate platform for emerging musicians.

How Did I Become “Judge Natalie”?

The truth is, opportunities like this don’t just fall into your lap—they are the result of genuine relationships, showing up, and offering value without expecting immediate returns.

My first connection to the show was back in 2011 when I visited the set with Sauti Sol, whom I managed at the time. It was there that I met Heidi, the show’s director, and we instantly got along. Fast forward a few years, I attended one of the final live shows of the season and noticed that the contestants needed more vocal support. So, without being asked, I volunteered my time as a vocal coach, offering off-camera, unpaid coaching sessions to help them perform at their best. The contestants loved it, the production team appreciated it, and most importantly—we saw results.

Two years later, I was in Amsterdam for my sister’s funeral when my phone rang. A South African number appeared on the screen. It was Heidi. We had briefly discussed the possibility of me getting involved in Tusker Project Fame 6, but I hadn’t expected what she would say next: “We want you as one of the audition judges in Nairobi.” It was a pivotal moment—a reminder that the seeds I had planted years before had finally blossomed into an opportunity I never saw coming.
